Baptism for Children
Preparing for Baptism
“These children of yours have been enlightened by Christ. They are to walk always as children of the light. May they keep the flame of faith alive in their hearts. When the Lord comes, may they go out to meet him with all the saints in the heavenly kingdom.” -Rite of Baptism for Children, 64 Welcome! The community of St. Jerome Catholic Church looks forward to welcoming your child as a new member of the sheepfold, the Church. Through Baptism, Christ, the Good Shepherd, comes to meet us and claim us as his own; he “calls his own sheep by name” (John 10:3). We are marked by the sign of the Cross to show we belong to him. Through a reading of the word of God, we receive his light and life. Submerged in holy water, we die to our old life, limited and mortal as a result of original sin, and we arise from the water as a “new creation,” with a share in the deathless life of the risen Christ. Since ancient times, the Church in preparing children to be baptized has asked parents to express their intention to raise them in the faith of the Catholic Church. The faith community of St. Jerome supports parents in finding the true meaning of Baptism and in nurturing their children in the love of God and practice of the faith. For Catholics, the Sacrament of Baptism is the first step in a lifelong journey of commitment and discipleship. Whether we are baptized as infants or adults, Baptism is one of God’s greatest gifts and it is a time for celebration and great joy! Parents wishing to have their child baptized at St. Jerome must first register at the Parish. Please call the Parish Office to register (727) 595-4610 or click here to register online. When are Baptism preparation sessions? All parents are to enroll in our Baptism formation sessions at least a month before the Baptism date. This process is a wonderful opportunity for parents, godparents and family to rejoice in the great grace of Baptism and prepare to renew their own baptismal vows. After receiving your forms we can schedule your session. Sign up as soon as possible! You do not need to wait for your baby to be born before preparing for Baptism! To enroll in Baptism formation, please complete the following form on this page and have your godparent(s) complete their respective form as well. To schedule your Baptism or for questions or concerns please contact the parish office at (727) 595-4610. “Baptism incorporates us into Christ and forms us into God’s people”
